Career

How many times have you wondered if you are professionally where you want to be?

Deadlines, workload, responsibilities create negative thoughts that interfere with our daily life. We worry about our future, whether we can cover our monthly expenses, whether we are meeting the expectations of our employer, our friends or our family. Sometimes we wake up thinking 'How am I going to get through this day? ''. We worry about our performance and fear the unknown. The feeling of uncertainty can become so intense that it will increase the pressure that is already building up day by day. We try hard not to explode but at some point one way or another we will release all the negative energy somewhere. It can be displaced anger when we yell at our mother or our partner. It may be substance abuse to block our negative thoughts. It could be sexual addiction as our response to stress. It could be isolation or overeating. It can be anything that could be an escape from reality.

Some things are out of our control. For example in times of economic crisis, when there is high unemployment people get laid off and have to rebuild their whole life. It is not their responsibility how the economic crisis was created, but they are responsible to create a plan for a new career. There are cases of people working in the 'wrong' sector in that their real self would like to work somewhere else. It is normal that some people cannot decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives when they are 18 years old. This is why we see people changing careers all the time. Money is very important and I know that a family's expectations may be directed solely to this area, but a person's personal values must be consistent with their professional life.

It is so common nowadays to meet deserving women who invest too much time, money and energy to study and work. They work so hard trying to move up and stop everything to raise a family. It makes sense for them to do this if they feel it will make them complete. But in cases where women want to take on roles in their lives other than being mothers and wives then the investment in academic training or career should have some payback and not just remain an experience. This is unique to each individual but the central idea is that we should pursue career aspirations that make us feel good about ourselves, earn an income representative of our worth and have a strategy for the future.

Financial stress is one of the most important types of stress and affects our well-being, our mental health and our purpose in life. It can also lead to depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, anger, loneliness, lack of sexual desire and more.

Is it too late?

I have faced financial stress in a large part of my life. I had built up so many fixed expenses that when my income dropped significantly I feared I would lose everything. That was the first lesson I learned the hard way. Low fixed costs are the key. Over the years I have created a strategy for how to anticipate, record my expenses, save and ensure financial independence. This means being able to meet annual financial requirements. Another important stepping stone for me was a career change. This was a very difficult decision because I had to create a new professional identity. It seemed scary. Would people think I'd failed? Am I too old to change careers? Well, no and no. As it turns out, I am much better at helping, guiding, teaching, supporting people as a Mentor, mentor and volunteer and that is something that is consistent with my core value of contribution. The famous neurotransmitter, serotonin, is secreted whenever I see the positive impact I have on someone's life; I see them smile and I feel joy. Simple as that. When it comes to time, trust me when I say that time is in your mind. It's never too late to change anything you want to change in your life. It is normal to worry about how your life may be affected. Outside your comfort zone is where all the exciting experiences will evolve and happen. The ultimate goal is to feel happiness and fulfillment. If you spend a lot of time in your work environment and it causes you distress, then every day will be a blow to your mental health. Psychosomatic symptoms are so common nowadays that we have come to think of them as normal. Our body is crying out and we ought to listen to it.
